A Little Bit About Sutton on the Norfolk Broads

July 10th, 2010

The Basics

Sutton is situated on the River Ant in the heart of the Norfolk Broads about 10 miles from Norwich and 1 mile from Stalham.   Sutton is a good centre for exploring the Northern Broads and only 3 miles from the nearest sandy beach. They are accessible by river, upstream from Barton Broad.  Pretty Sutton Staithe is a quiet place to moor and explore.

Sutton staithe lies at the eastern end of Sutton Broad and has good moorings and a hotel/pub. The village itself, on the opposite side of the A149 road, has a shop with post office and garden centre and a pottery (Sutton Pottery).  Nearby Sutton Mill, a 9 storey corn mill, although not open to the public it is well worth the walk from the staithe to appreciate just how big this mill is – one of the largest in Norfolk.   The staithe at Sutton (and Stalham) is accessible by water from a channel off the River Ant which opens up as you get onto lovely Sutton Broad.   Sutton Staithe has a popular hotel/restaurant & pub, the Sutton Staithe Hotel situated right next to the boatyard and moorings serving good food and beer.  The family friendly village provides good local amenities.  Nearby Stalham a peaceful little market town provides a range of pubs (all serving food), restaurants, take aways and village stores in its high street, there is a Farmers market held in Stalham Village Hall on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month and a Craft Fair on the 2nd and 4th Saturday.

Sailing & Boating

Our properties are situated on the boatyards grounds with access to moorings from the boatyard if required.  There is a slip way nearby for Trailer Sailors. If you bring your own boat, or you hire one locally, there is so much to discover and explore. For peace and tranquility or uninterrupted sailing, head for Barton Broad near Neatishead (½ hour cruising). Popular destinations such as Potter Heigham (4 hours cruising or 10 mins driving) and Wroxham (approx 6 hours cruising or 10 mins driving) are great days out for all the family.

Fishing
Our properties have fishing rights on a basin located next to the properties and Sutton Staithe is accessible to the public offering the angler the opportunity to fish the River Ant. However, if you believe variety is the spice of life your national fishing licence (in season) covers all of the Broads which you can explore by road or river.
PLEASE NOTE FISHING CLOSED SEASON IS 15 MARCH TO 15 JUNE

Relaxing with the Wildlife

Sutton Staithe is a very popular and ideal base for Twitchers. The Broads offer a diverse array of birds, butterfly’s and wildlife. Ranging from the Raptor’s to the Swallowtail Butterfly there are numerous species found only in this area of Europe.     From the comfort of the boatyard grounds you can marvel at the grace of the heron, be amused as the ducks come into land and ponder at the destination of the geese in formation. No wonder the Broads has always attracted bird and nature lovers because it’s all there right in front of you in all its unspoilt glory. Please visit www.wildlifetrust.org.uk/norfolk
